چکیده

The effect of adding different impurity gases and ICRF heating on divertor detachment has been compared for ohmic, L-mode and high-q11 ( 300 MW/ m), H-mode plasmas. The relative effect of all these external controls on divertor and core radiation is evaluated. Recycling gases (Ne and Ar) are found to primarily affect the main plasma as opposed to the divertor region. The lower-Z nonrecycling gases, N 2 and CD4 are more efficacious in this regard. N 2 was found effective in inducing detachment for high-q11, H-mode plasmas. An additional advantage of N 2 over the higher-Z gases is that its injection resulted in the smallest degradation in H-mode energy confinement (-10%).

PFC / JA - 96 - 23 Particle Drift Effects on the Alcator C - Mod Divertor

The sign of the toroidal magnetic field has a major effect on the divertor in Alcator C-Mod, determining whether the higher recycling is on the inboard or outboard side and leading to inboard/outboard temperature and density differences up to a factor of ten. A recently published paper [1] reported in detail on these observations, which are an indication of the importance of plasma particle dri...

PFC / JA - 96 - 16 Experimental Investigation of Transport Phenomena in the Scrape - off Layer and Divertor

Transport physics in the divertor and scrape-off layer of Alcator C-Mod is investigated for a wide range of plasma conditions. Parallel (//) transport topics include: low-recycling, high-recycling, and detached regimes, thermoelectric currents, asymmetric heat fluxes driven by thermoelectric currents, and reversed divertor flows. Perpendicular (I) transport topics include: expected and measured...

PFC / JA - 94 - 35 Performance of the Alcator C - Mod Closed Divertor in Ohmically Heated Plasmas

Alcator C-Mod operation with a single null closed divertor produces clean, Zeff <1.3 plasmas and two dissipative divertor regimes. For ;1e > 0.7x 1020 m3 the divertor plasma is highly recycling and radiative with high densities and low temperatures near the strike points. If the temperature near the target plates drops to <5 eV, this plasma detaches from the plates over most of their surfaces. ...

PFC / JA - 96 - 33 Radiative and 3 - Body Recombination in Alcator C

Significant recombination of the majority ion species has been observed in the divertor region of Alcator C-Mod under detached conditions. This determination is made by analysis of the visible spectrum from the divertor, in particular the Balmer series line emission and the observed recombination continuum, including an apparent recombination edge at-375 nm. The analysis shows that the electron...

PFC / JA - % - 7 Application of collisional - radiative , atomic - molecular model to the recombining divertor plasma

Recombination of hydrogen plasma in the divertor volume can be considered as a simple explanation of divertor plasma detachment phenomena experimentally observed on many tokamaks. As will be shown in this report, the presence of rotationally and vibrationally excited molecules significantly enhance the conventional three-body recombination of plasma and expand the plasma temperature and density...
